Isabelle Huppert and Her Daughter Meet on Screen at Cannes

"CANNES — In Marc Fitoussi’s “Copacabana,” presented as part of Critics’ Week, Isabelle Huppert plays an infantile mother who embarrasses her conventional daughter, played by Lolita Chammah. Gaudy and insouciant, Ms. Huppert’s Babou is a dropout from society, a character from another age. She smears her eye makeup beyond limits, wears furs over miniskirts, dreams of escape to exotic havens — like Copacabana — and seems to be careening toward disaster. Ms. Chammah, who is 26, plays the mature and demure Esmeralda who turns on this excessive mother and rejects her.

This is the first time the actresses play opposite each other in substantive roles, and they are thrilled. Ms. Huppert, who is Ms. Chammah’s mother in real life, said, “We’ve acted in movies together...”

“Yes, but we haven’t actually played scenes together,” Ms. Chammah chimed in. “Well, I’m actually not that reasonable at all. So that was part of the fun.”"
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Maybe Huppert will never die, then? I'll have to Netflix this as soon as it comes out.
