Taymor’s ‘Tempest’ Will Be Showcased at New York Film Festival

"A brave new reworking of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” directed by Julie Taymor will be the centerpiece film of the New York Film Festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center said on Friday. Ms. Taymor’s cinematic adaptation of “The Tempest” – her first filmed version of Shakespeare since “Titus,” her stylized 1999 take on “Titus Andronicus” – will be shown in the festival on Oct. 2 at Alice Tully Hall. In a gender-bending twist on the play, Ms. Taymor’s “Tempest” stars Helen Mirren as the sorceress Prospera. It also features Felicity Jones as her daughter, Miranda; Ben Whishaw as Ariel; Djimon Hounsou as Caliban; Alfred Molina as Stephano; Alan Cumming as Sebastian; Chris Cooper as Antonio; David Strathairn as Alonso; and Russell Brand as Trinculo. Ms. Taymor’s directing credits include the film “Across the Universe” as well as the Broadway musical “The Lion King” and – maybe, just maybe – “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark.” The festival runs from Sept. 24 through Oct. 10 and will open with David Fincher’s “The Social Network.”
I heard something about this production when it was first revealed Helen Mirren was playing Prospero as Prospera, and upon reading this blurb, I have to say, the rest of the cast is interesting, too, except for Russell Brand, who just sucks.

Ah well, the film will still definitely be Netflixed.
